Fresh thinking to create digital first brands

Why do we use the picture of a light bulb to illuminate this post?

In the 1870s, before the development of practical techniques to reproduce photographs on the printed page, illustrations and cartoons were a mainstay of newspapers & magazines around the world. Editors would commission illustrators to depict events described in the articles. Early reports of Edison’s success with the invention of the electric light bulb were often illustrated with drawings of a dark room illuminated by a single lamp.

As the bulb’s success became more and more apparent, iconic photographs of Edison next to his invention stood out in the public’s mind. The bulb came to stand for all of Edison’s inventive prowess.

But it was in early twentieth-century cartoons, when Felix the Cat or Mickey Mouse was thinking, symbols and letters would sometimes appear over their heads. It was in these symbolic images that we first see the light bulb used to represent a fresh new idea.

We believe every brand has a story and our goal is to craft these with a compelling narrative and rich visual language. When we develop concepts for our clients we always start with a detailed online research & market audit programme before undertaking a brand workshop. The reason for running these sessions with our clients is to clearly define a brand’s purpose, or promise, and develop a clear creative and communication brief to develop compelling ideas for digital first brands.
